Ruth Bader Ginsburg Tribute Scholarship

By 2021 Tribute Statement Danika Jones

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Tribute Scholarship Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has served as an inspiration for girls and women for decades, and her legacy and inspiration lives on to this day. Justice Ginsburg was confident and unapologetic in her expectations of equality for all, speaking without hesitation for those who were or felt unable to speak for themselves. Growing up, Justice Ginsburg experienced several setbacks that, even if experienced individually, would be enough to cause a person to lose hope, but she faced them head on and used them to drive her further in life. It is with utmost respect and admiration that I aim to embrace some of Justice Ginsburg’s most admirable qualities in my pursuit of a career in the field of law.

Justice Ginsburg stood for integrity, leadership, and independence. These are all traits that I aim to embody in not only my education and future career, but also in my daily life. My parents are both honest and hardworking people and they have held my sister and I to the same standards. Honesty and integrity are traits that can seem hard to come by in a changing world, but it is my hope that by exemplifying these traits in my interactions with others, it will not only build up relationships based on trust and communication, but will also inspire others to act in a similar manner throughout their life. This is something that I feel Justice Ginsburg also demonstrated with her life’s work and it would be an honor to continue that integrity in the legal profession.

Justice Ginsburg’s independence and leadership also serves as an inspiration to me. My parents both raised me to be fiercely independent and self-sufficient, and Justice Ginsburg is a testament to how independence and resourcefulness of this kind can lead to not only career fulfillment, but also personal fulfillment as well. I admire her ability to juggle her education and career with motherhood and maintain an equal partnership with her husband. I hope to continue to embody both the independence that I have been taught thus far as well as some of the leadership qualities that Justice Ginsburg had so that I can share those qualities with my clients and colleagues in the future.

By working in family law, I hope to help people maneuver through a difficult time in their lives, and I especially hope to help women feel confident and empowered to move forward and find success in the new chapter of their lives. I hope to help represent women who need someone to speak up on their behalf and who have been led to feel that they don’t have a voice or a choice. I hope to bring equitable resolutions to all of my clients while continuing to exemplify integrity and respectfulness in my interactions with opposing counsel and other parties involved in these processes. Ginsburg once said that she would like to be remembered as “Someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability.” This quote effectively sums up the qualities of Justice Ginsburg that relate to myself, my goals, and my standards. Justice Ginsburg was honest, hard-working, and independent, and she used those qualities to do her best in every aspect. I too aim to use my skills and values to always do my best for not only my clients, but also for the world around me. It is an honor to share in the legal field with Justice Ginsburg and I hope to behave in a professional capacity that would make her proud.
